Title: Unveiling the Top 10 Old Hollywood Scandals of the 1940s: A Mirror to Modern-day Celebrity Scandals
In the golden age of Hollywood, the 1940s were a time of glamour, intrigue, and scandal. As we delve into the past, we find a striking resemblance to the present-day celebrity world, where personal lives often intertwine with public personas. Here's a look at the top 10 biggest old Hollywood scandals of the 1940s, many of which remain fresh and relevant today.
1. The Love Affair of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard (1939-1942) - This whirlwind romance between two of Hollywood's biggest stars ended tragically when Lombard died in a plane crash during World War II. The public mourning for Lombard was unprecedented, setting a precedent for the emotional connection fans feel with celebrities today.
2. The Marilyn Monroe-Joe DiMaggio Romance (1952-1954) - Monroe's tumultuous relationship with the Yankees baseball legend was one of the first high-profile celebrity romances, mirroring the intense media scrutiny and public fascination with celebrity relationships today.
3. The Humphrey Bogart-Lauren Bacall Love Story (1944-1957) - Their on-screen chemistry translated into real life, and their enduring love story is still celebrated today. The private nature of their relationship, despite constant media attention, is reminiscent of modern-day celebrity couples who value their privacy.
4. The Scandal Surrounding Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth (1940-1947) - Welles' controversial marriage to Hayworth, including allegations of domestic abuse, shed light on the darker side of Hollywood marriages, a topic still relevant in today's celebrity world.
5. The Blacklisting of the Hollywood Ten (1947) - The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) investigated suspected communist activity in the film industry, leading to the blacklisting of several prominent Hollywood figures. This event highlighted the

I feel so bad for Hattie…she was good enough to win the award but couldn’t accept it. 😢
Add Fatty Arbuckle
They use Charlie Chaplin's sex life as an excuse for his 'downfall' in Hollywood. But like Orson Welles it had nothing to do with the official story. They both co-founded an organisation called the Society of Independent Motion Picture Producers in 1941 which was a direct up yours to the Hollywood moguls own Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America.
Is that the late Great Christopher Lee narrating the documentary on Errol Flynn? My goodness that sounds even more glorious than the infamous scandal here.
Um. Meghan is NOT on the same caliber as Rita Hayworth
The seamless integration of music and production design in your video reflects your unwavering dedication to encapsulating the spirit of both eras, resulting in a mesmerizing and emotionally charged viewing experience. DO YOU AGREE WITH ME
Anyone can just love a classic movie!!!!!! I guess even back then anything can cause a scandal. I hope we have more top 10 scandals. I was thinking of the Top 10 Cartoon Scandals or The Top 10 Scandals of the 1990s.
Not good y’all see
9:51 what extra sad about that is that's what Hollywood dose to this day with black actors in the china market.
Don't forget that Oona O'Neill was younger than Chaplin's oldest surviving child (Oona was born May 14 1925, Charlie Jr was born May 5 1925. I know it's only a 9 day difference but somehow I feel like that's worse)
starting with a BIG oof given its recreational status in most states & prescriptions for nearly the rest. Just imagin the lives and money wasted just cause it was guna replace wood to make paper & it scared the industry.
Hattie was an American actress. Her roll was perfect. She was Gone with the Wind❤
The new Blacklist is cancel culture
Not me sitting here smoking my weed legally watching number 10
yikes
Atlanta of all places…smh
Frances Farmer was a SCUMBAG.
Although I don't believe in The Communist View & am 100% Democratic Republic View, I'm of the view that what was, in fact, done to The Hollywood Ten was horrible on several accounts. First & Foremost, in part, living in A Democracy, it's not only Legally Constitutional to respect other's points, but, should be understandable, at the very least. Second, Joseph McCarthy & Roy Cohn, who'd led The So-Called Crusade to get these people were found to be, later, Less Than Stellar In Their Own Lifestyles For Those Times (while I'm not at all even trying to condemn them & say that people should be able to live their own lives, Roy Cohn's Homosexuality, while not at all saying that he shouldn't have been allowed to have A Sexual Preference that I do not have, but, even more so, given that, unfortunately, it was then also an Illegal Act). Third & Finally, given the fact that less than 5+ years or so prior, The Soviets became Allies & Helped Win (if not outright win, being First To Take Berlin/Bring Down The Third Reich) World War II, and, under The FDR Administration, were accepted, not to mention that The Shift from Allies to Enemies was instantaneous (at least near instantaneous), there should have, at the very least, been A Grandfathering View (albeit, still illegal, as I'd mentioned) for these people who declared themselves as Communist. Therefore, even though I am Democratic & do not agree with Communism & am glad to have seen 1989 Breakup Of The Soviet Union by it's own people, following the attempted Coup De Tante of Mikail Gorbochev, himself A Communist, although attempt at reforms had paved the way, this does not One Of The Best, if not the best, Things About A Democracy is to respect & to accept that Others Might Not Think The Way You Do. For the record, I was surprised Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle was not #1 on The List. From what I've heard, from Parents & Grandparents & have seen in Documentaries, it was likely The Biggest (No Pun Intended) Scandal of it's time (I believe it even required 3 trials before resolution). I'm thankful for the Video. Please forgive my respectful criticism about The Arbuckle Case.
MsMojo, Please do a video on Movie Jewelry. Where are all the lovely pieces now?
Disgraceful how Hattie McDowell was treated .
I echo the comment about Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini; I’d say that was the biggest scandal of the 1940s. Nothing else had the magnitude of Bergman’s fall from being the most bankable female star in Hollywood to being denounced on the US Senate floor.
Why wasn't Hattie given a Oscar statue the regular size then everyone else and whatever happened to her Oscar she won.
Lordy Lordy. Let’s get down and ugly
Senator McCarthy was a total scumbag!
I remember hearing about the Errol Flynn trial in that the DA tried to present the accusers as “wholesome pillars of virtue”, but Flynn’s attorney dug up some scandalous dirt on both accusers. They both have had numerous sexual encounters with older, married men, and that one of them had had an abortion, which was illegal at the time. In other words, the accusers were actually sluts.
They didn't let the black lady sit with the rest of the cast? God, that's sickening. I hope someone had the good sense to apologise to that lady before she passed. No-one should be treated like that.
Lila Leeds was "LIE-la", not "LIL-a".
I had never heard of the Errol Flynn scandal. I feel bad for those brave young women who came through. I believe them.
Errol Flynn, another one who liked them young… very young! Today we call them paedophiles.
There is no God
Hattie did receive her Oscar on stage. She was seated pretty far away from the stage. She had a short Thank you. I think that she was very good in GWTW.p
Addressed to the Writer(s)/Presenter of this Video: I am continually in a quandary as to why all those who write and present their respective narratives on (I guess) important people, which include the luminaries of Hollywood, have such an incredibly limited vocabulary in the area of descriptors. Why are the terms "icon" and "iconic" continually used in these numerous videos, when long ago they should have been recognized as cliches, as tired, worn-out words, that offer absolutely nothing to the written or spoken discussion here? Those who resort to using such terms demonstrate their stupidity and their lack of creativity, and inability–or lack of desire, to consult a thesaurus, which is a book a synonyms, i.e., a book of similar words, to find and subsequently use similar descriptors that can elevate/heighten their writings to fresher, more spontaneous, and, ultimately, more fascinating narratives. ~drs (01/05/24)
Really???!?? I just threw up watching this comparison in your video!!! 🤢🤢🤮🤮 Come on, Ms. Mojo…you can do better than this!!!! I mean, in this video you DARE to put Rachel Meghan Markle’s career in the SAME category as Rita Hayworth, AND, (oh my goodness), Princess Grace’s former big screen career before marrying royalty! Seriously?!?! RMM was not even the headliner on a cable tv show that she was actually being written out of at the time she became Mrs. Harry Windsor! She’s (based on her depth of acting portfolio) not worthy of being listed in this category! She gave up NOTHING!!! Absolutely NOTHING! She was fortunate to marry into the Royal family and she was given a beautiful wedding and the opportunity to do so many positive things for others! She threw that away but she did bring her husband (whose“I do” to RMM, elevated her celebrity status) to California so that hopefully his clout could afford her the kind of status she longed for and the kind those other two actresses (Princess Grace and Rita Hayworth) had actually achieved BEFORE marrying their royal spouses.
Bummer on this video!
