Late nights: Bad for health? BBC News Review

Staying up late into the night. For some people, it’s just the way they prefer to live. But it could be affecting their health.

Title: Late-Night Habits: A Potential Health Risk Amidst Modern Lifestyles

In the era of round-the-clock work culture and entertainment, staying up late has become a common practice for many. However, a recent BBC News Review has shed light on the potential health risks associated with late-night habits, emphasizing the need for a balanced sleep schedule.

The article, 'Late nights: Bad for health? BBC News Review', highlights a study published in the journal 'Sleep Health'. The research suggests that regularly sleeping less than six hours a night could increase the risk of stroke and heart disease. This information is particularly relevant in today's fast-paced world, where long work hours and late-night entertainment often lead to sleep deprivation.

The study, conducted over a period of 16 years, involved over 430,000 participants. It found that those who slept for less than six hours a night had a 12% higher risk of stroke and a 2% higher risk of coronary heart disease compared to those who slept for seven to eight hours.

While the link between sleep duration and health risks is not new, the scale of the study and the specific duration of sleep highlighted make it a significant addition to existing research. The findings underscore the importance of maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and ensuring adequate sleep for overall health.

In conclusion, the 'Late nights: Bad for health? BBC News Review' serves as a timely reminder of the potential health risks associated with late-night habits. As we navigate through our modern lifestyles, it is crucial to prioritize sleep and maintain a balanced routine for our well-being.

  • From my experience in school, most students are night owls. I'm the opposite. I love waking up at the crack of dawn and commuting as early as possible. Early in the morning, the landscapes are amazing. In my country, nights are a bit dangerous and you're prone to be robbed and suffer chronic injuries. I'd better live in peace.

  • Several years ago, I was an early bird. I woke up early in the morning to exercise and go running. At that time, my health was extremely good, both mental and physical. However, I am gradually addicted to social media, like TikTok and Facebook, so I almost stay up late every single day. I realized that I was deteriorating in health. I frequently have headaches and become sedentary and stagnant in my leisure pursuits than I used to. Now I am endevouring myself to break my bad habits and lead a healthy and balanced life.

  • I’m a night owl & it’s been a problem for decades. I used to wake up before noon, but now find that very difficult.
When I had a 9-5 & a live in girlfriend, it wasn’t too hard to live normally. Also when I taught surf school, it was easy to wake up.
But being self employed for years now, I wake up between 1-3pm & work until sunrise, it’s a very isolating schedule & my wife hates it…as do I.
I haven’t been able to Turin it around, except for a few days a month, for 10yrs+ 😬

  • Watching this while I still at uni and it's 3pm with a headache.
    OMG that's brutal.
