About calling someone an Uncle Tom: Is there an equivalent for white people? It seems to me tha whites have the privilege of individuality; their individual actions DO NOT represent the collective. Leftists do not accord minorities (I am Puerto Rican, and yes, it happens to us too), and blacks, Natives, etc., the right to individuality. We are always on parade representing our group. When a white commits a crime, a person committed the crime. When a Puerto Rican commits a crime, the fault reverberates back to the group. I have a sorta opposite awakening. I've been fairly socially liberal and financially conservative my whole adult life. My dad was military and I grew up wanting to serve. I went to the recruitment office on 9/12/2001 but caught some felonies before signing the paperwork a couple months later. I'm glad I didn't join. Pretty quickly there were some red flags popping up but I didn't realize it until a few years later.
During the 2016 campaign I heard some ridiculous things about Trump and went online to find out the context so I could understand how evil he was and be better informed when talking about it. That's when I realized that something was very wrong. The rabbit hole was deep but I began to see that we lived in a single party rule government. I heard all the usual soundbytes of each side bashing the other but the votes told a different story. They were lying straight to our face and cable news was facilitating it. When President Trump won the mask came off completely. I tried showing people in context videos when they were shrieking about the Trump atrocity of the day and they refused to even look.
1984 is an apt comparison for the overall dystopia we've been living but the cave allegory was spot on for my individual experience.

Your political views don't matter as long as you pursue critical thinking and to question what's around you. Such individuals tend to end up at the same place as other critical thinkers – in the realm of reason.
Many of us grew up VERY idealistic, VERY 99.9999% "leftist" and one day had to actually live in life in reality. Paying taxes is usually the first step once you move out or at least get a paycheck. But then (if you actually live life) you come across all sorts of other situations – it's unavoidable. Again, nothing wrong with where you start as long as you SEEK.
Let's face it, many people remain stuck in their views their entire lives. Which to me, means they don't ever pursue personal growth – what they are is perfect as it is, they know everything and it's all great (or the world needs to change just for THEM so 'it can be great'). So again, remember idealistic and/or young people with their dreams can still be seekers. This is why IMO it's best to always keep the bridge open for conversation and to still enter dialogue with anyone. If they burn that once chance by being a total jerk – you have another person to cross of your list of who gets a single second of your time.
But every now and again you'll come across a fervent idealist who finds discussion fascinating and likes to posit and entertain ideas. THOSE ARE WINNERS. Make connections with those people regardless their current views. If anything they will benefit from more discussion with you as they appreciate the conversations.
