Best Yoga Poses to Relieve Gas and Improve Digestion

If you’re experiencing gas discomfort, bloating, or indigestion, these simple yoga poses can help alleviate these symptoms and improve your digestion. Here is a 15-minute yoga sequence designed specifically for gas relief and better digestion.

1. Seated Mountain Pose (Tadasana)

Stand or sit with your feet flat on the floor, hands by your sides, and palms facing forward. Make sure your spine is straight and your neck is relaxed. Breathe deeply for a minute while focusing on your connection with the ground. This pose calms the brain and helps prepare the body for more complex postures.

2. Cat-Cow Pose (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana)

Get on all fours with your wrists directly under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Inhale and slowly arch your back, lifting your head and tailbone, while dropping your belly. Exhale, round your spine by pulling your navel towards your spine, tucking your tailbone, and looking towards your navel. Repeat for several rounds. This pose helps massage internal organs and stimulate the digestive fire (agni).

3. Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

From all fours, tuck your toes and lift your hips towards the sky, creating an “A” shape. Press your palms into the ground, release your head, and relax your neck. Hold for several breaths, focusing on lengthening your spine and easing any tension in the hips and lower back.

4. Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana)

Start in Downward Facing Dog, then bring your right knee between your hands while keeping the left leg extended behind you. Lower your torso over the right knee and extend the left leg straight out behind you. Hold for several breaths, then switch sides. Pigeon Pose helps release gas by stimulating the muscles in the abdomen and gut.

5. Wind-Relieving Pose (Pawanmuktasana)

Lying on your back, bring both knees towards your chest and hug them tightly. Release your hand one at a time, interlacing your fingers behind your low back, and lift your head, shoulders, and neck off the ground. Hold for several breaths, then release and repeat. This pose helps massage the abdominal organs and alleviate gas and bloating.

6. Legs Up the Wall Pose (Viparita Karani)

Sit with your right side facing a wall, then lay down on your back and swing your legs up the wall. Relax your arms at your sides or prop them up on pillows for support. Close your eyes and stay in this peaceful position for 5 minutes, focusing on deep, calming breaths, and allowing gravity to help soothe your digestive system.

7. Savasana (Corpse Pose)

Lie flat on your back and allow your body to relax completely. Close your eyes and focus on your breath, letting go of any tension or discomfort in your body. Relax here for several minutes, allowing your mind and body to release and rejuvenate.
