Crazy to think how recent this was… and unthinkable that it would happen in a place like germany when you look at it now
I had family in Berlin and remember how terrible the situation was for Berliners especially when some members of the family were trapped living in East Berlin.
People were scared to even have conversations with colleagues for fear of being reported. Parcels from the West were duly noted by authorities in their street. a young member of the family applied for further education he was told that he was disqualified as he had been reported as having too much influence from the West!!
In 1994 we went to visit East Berlin, we went via Charlottenberg station the Stasi separated us I was sent to Auslander my husband and daughter to a tunnel for West Germans and the rest of the family went as West Berliners so we were all separated. I was frightened as I had wait alone for more than one hour alone in East Berlin exit to be reunited with my husband and daughter. My brother -in-law eventually came looking for us and we then went by taxi cousin's home.
Nobody dared speak in public for fear of being reported.

My uncle Immo was arrested by the Stasi for participating in the Berlin Uprising in the 50s. They went to his home, physically pulled him from the house and beat him in front of his family and neighbors. He had no trial. He went to a gulag for 3 years. Later in the 60s he was arrested again for working with Western Intelligence agencies smuggling in Western Magazines like LOOK, LIFE and Der Speigal. His friend was smuggling in bibles. When they got caught he got 3.5 years in a Soviet Prison (gulags were discontinued at this time). It was just as brutal as a gulag. While he was in jail my mother, Oma Opa and uncle escaped to West Berlin. Years later my Uncle Immo was sitting on my back deck in America drinking whiskey and smoking cigars. I asked him “Was it worth it? Going to prison and constantly fighting the communist in East Germany “ He looked at me, took a puff on his cigar and smiled, “Yes it was, I’m sitting here with you in America, Germany is United and the Communists are gone, I won.”

There was NEVER a debate as to which way of life was better..One system of government had to LITERALLY build a wall to keep its best and brightest in. The other way of life, you were free to do as you so desire.
