Louis B. Mayer’s Legendary Impact on the Movie Industry
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Louis B. Mayer, born in 1884 in Minsk, Russian Empire (now Belarus), was a pioneer in the early Hollywood film industry. After immigrating to the United States, Mayer worked as a tailor and later opened a small photo studio. His interest in visual storytelling led him to join the burgeoning film industry in the 1910s.
Founding of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)
Mayer’s career took a significant turn in 1924 when he joined forces with Marcus Loew, Nicholas Schenck, and Irving Thalberg to form Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). The studio quickly established itself as a major player in Hollywood, producing films that became some of the most iconic of the era.
Introduction of the Star System
One of Mayer’s most significant contributions to the film industry was the introduction of the star system. He believed that stars could sell tickets and help build a studio’s brand. Under Mayer’s guidance, MGM signed and nurtured the careers of several iconic stars such as Greta Garbo, Judy Garland, Clark Gable, and Spencer Tracy.
Golden Age of Hollywood
The 1930s and 1940s, often referred to as the Golden Age of Hollywood, were marked by MGM’s dominance in the film industry. During this period, the studio released numerous classic films, including “The Wizard of Oz,” “Gone with the Wind,” and “An American in Paris.” These films not only entertained audiences but also reflected the social, political, and cultural issues of their times.
Louis B. Mayer’s Legacy
Despite facing criticism for his autocratic management style, Louis B. Mayer’s impact on the film industry cannot be overstated. His vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and relentless drive helped transform MGM into one of Hollywood’s most successful and influential studios. His pioneering work in the star system and the production of countless classical films ensured his place in the annals of cinema history.

He died at 72, not 75.
Jack warner was no saint, either!
Magnificent documentary. Thanks so much.
Really nothing I haven't heard before except for his childhood. He was pretty much broken from his beginning and always searching for true happiness which he really never found. Yes he built an empire but at what cost to him and all those stars. The one thing I will never understand is who were Metro and Goldwyn and why was he always billed after them in the title of the company when he was such a control freak?
The "slave system" is more widely known as the studio system. Took nearly 60 years to break it, especially for child actors
I'd prefer a William Wellman or Ben Hecht bio.
How did the Lion logo came about?
The CIA influenced the Fake Jew movie evil makers!
What is with the annoying "music" in the background? It's ridiculous!
All the studio heads were ruthless SOBs.
4:57 $4,000,000 in 1924 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $73,491,228.07 today,
Shame on Biography for including Charles Higham, a shameless hack who made a career out of penning cheap biographies made up of cheap gossip.
He was born in Russia all the founders of Hollywood were born in Russia n they ended up deciding what all American people wound be 🤬🤬🤬🤬
He was an abusive narcissist psychopath he was born in Russia not even America he created the Oscars the Oscars are actually Russian Hollywood n now the USA is actually a town n country that was born in Eastern Europe that’s all American for yah😅😅😅💅💅💅💅
This is how n why Hollywood is so toxic narcissist entitled n abuse today it’s been like that for over 100 years 🤬🤬🤬💅💅💅
I wonder when the first adult films were made! I’ll bet Mayer had a hand in that
Jank men make good money!
Too bad for Louis B Mayer, but he was known for being less than good moral character. I hated what he did to his wife who stood by him for years. In his later years, I think he should have gone to Italy, the Amalfi Coast, or north, Lake Como, and bought a Villa… and La Dolce Vita!!
He looks like Ben Stein
Was L.B. Mayer fired from MGM before Clark Gable?
I'm from Haverhill Massachusetts. I didn't know about this story
A good overview…but also shallow & superficial. For Mayer was truly a beast — and destroyed people.
He was an evil narcissist who abused actors and denigrated women.
Narrated by fast-talking annoying Alexa or something.
Oy vey
He was a Harvey Weinstein of his time.
Herbert Hoover was not a "little-known Washington bureaucrat," as this film depicts him in the 1920's. Before he was named Secretary of Commerce he already was world famous as the director of America's European relief efforts during and after WW1; efforts which saved millions of lives.
This is how the Illuminate started.
He was the Harvey Weinstein at this time. Amazingly gifted and a complete monster predator
Any human who needs to keep people under his reign to feel more powerful means they are weak and frail minded, ie Harvey weinstein, ie trump, ie Stalin, ie Hitler
While I did and to some extent still do enjoy quite a few of the MGM movies of the past, there is no refuting that Mayer was the most powerful Jew in America of his time!
When it came to politics and his choice of party along with his friendship with Herber Clark Hoover, Mayer showed questionable judgement! Not only did Mayer back the wrong party, but history would also later show the Mayer backed the wrong horse! In addition, his treatment of Judy Garland was deplorable!
The old adage must be true; one should make an effort to be kind and show some humility when going up the ladder! The opposite is also true, the bigger and meaner they are, the harder they fall!!!
On the upside, M-G-M no longer exists.
And so it goes.
I was looking for Harvey Weinstein’s impact on Hollywood and this came up instead
Mayer new the stock market was going to crash. Lol
Propaganda machine to the 5th power
"Birth of a Nation" was Louis B. Meyer's big break… I'm not surprised. Once again, another American industrial magnate that parasitically capitalized on the Blk American struggle… Louis B.Meyer, an immigrant, astonishingly had more access to the American dream than Blk Americans (who were in America since the founding of the USA). … This is another example of why Foundational Blk Americans (FBA) deserve reparations from the government of the United States of America … Now.

My mom had several books about Old Hollywood. I remember Hollywood Babylon parts 1 & 2! I used to look at the book The Talkies or as I called it in my childhood "the big green book". I became fascinated by the idea of looking so beautiful and being on tv. I wanted to go to Hollywood since the age of 9!!!! I had no idea until my adult life how horrible Hollywood life was!
Helen Hays called Mayer evil incarnate. The source from MGM When the Lion Roars.
Terrific biography ………………………..thank you!……………………..learned a lot………….
That is so fake!. What I saw there is total lies and that media. I own MGM and always have. It looks like a bunch of Photoshop by a bunch of psychopaths.
L.B. !!
Paragon !!
Thanks!
I didn’t like to see the poor horses hurt doing the chariot race. I saw some horses fall. The movies then had no compassion for animals then and there were no laws to protect them. It made me very sad seeing that.
Wow awards was done not to paid more money.. shoot crazy they gave a trophy not to paid…no sad am middle class
